About this event

If you can walk, you can snowshoe. That’s the best-kept secret of winter in the mountains. No lift tickets, no required lessons, no flying downhill: just you, a pair of snowshoes, and a forest gone quiet under fresh snow. It’s the easiest way to get into the mountains in winter, and one of the most social, since you can talk the whole way.

We’ll spend about an hour walking through snowshoeing from a true beginner’s point of view: what it is, what you need, what it costs, where to go near Seattle and how to stay safe. Then we’ll share how Gearhouse helps people get out on the snow together all winter. You’ll leave knowing whether it’s your thing, and if it is, exactly how to get started.

Come curious, and leave with a plan and a few new people to share the trail with.

What we’ll cover

• What is snowshoeing, anyway? How snowshoes work, what a day on the snow actually looks like, and how it compares to hiking, cross-country skiing and downhill.

• Is it right for me? How much fitness you need, how quickly you’ll pick it up, and an honest look at the costs: rentals, parking permits and the gear you may already own.

• Gear and what to wear: snowshoes, poles and boots; layering to stay warm and dry (and why cotton is the enemy); and what to pack in your day bag.

• Where to go near Seattle: beginner-friendly spots like Gold Creek Pond at Snoqualmie Pass, the snowshoe trails at the Summit Nordic Center, and Paradise at Mount Rainier, where rangers usually lead free snowshoe walks on winter weekends.

• Snow safety basics: checking the avalanche forecast, why some popular “easy” trails cross avalanche paths, Sno-Park permits and winter driving, and trail etiquette (like staying off groomed ski tracks).

• What’s next: how to go from curious to confident, and how to find people to go with.

Schedule

• 6:00 pm Arrive, grab a drink from the café and find a seat

• 6:10 pm Snowshoeing 101 (about 45 minutes)

• 6:55 pm Winter at Gearhouse: our beginner snowshoe program and what’s coming this season (about 10 minutes)

• 7:05 pm Q&A: bring every question you’ve been too shy to ask, and try on a pair of snowshoes

• 7:30 pm Wrap up

Why now?

Snow usually starts piling up at the passes in December, so late November is the perfect time to figure out what you need before the first good snow day. Sno-Park permits are already on sale, and you’ll know exactly which one (if any) you need. No pressure to buy anything.

Winter at Gearhouse

Gearhouse is an outdoor club and café on Capitol Hill, a home base for people who want to get outside more, learn new skills and find their people. Winter is when our community really comes together:

• Beginner snowshoe program: members can learn from day one with the same small group, building up to a capstone trip together. Gear is included.

• Rides to the mountains: members share rides up to the snow, so you’re never figuring out the drive alone.

• Gear when you need it: members borrow from our gear library, so you can try a sport before buying anything.

• More winter sports and café nights: cross-country and downhill skiing, avalanche awareness, winter driving clinics and plenty of evenings to swap stories.

A membership is required to take part in our winter programs and events. Learn more and join here.

Pray for Snow · Thu, Dec 3 · 6:00–8:30 pm

You’re invited to our winter kickoff party, and it’s open to everyone. Pray for Snow is a potluck, music and a night with the people you’ll be sharing the mountains with all winter. We’ll reveal the full winter calendar, introduce the people who lead each sport, and open sign-ups for our beginner programs, including snowshoeing. If you’re thinking about joining Gearhouse, it’s the best night to do it. RSVP for Pray for Snow

What to bring

Getting there

• The café is at 800 E Thomas St, a 5-minute walk from the Capitol Hill light rail station.

• Driving? Street parking nearby, or the paid lot next to the café ($4/hr).
