About this event
Feminists are as old as time. Seattle NOW is hosting a preview reading of Carried by the Current , a new play by author and playwright Nicola Pearson, presented by Women’s Work Productions. The play tells the true story of The Women’s Commonwealth: a group of women in Belton, Texas who gained financial independence, escaped abusive marriages, and created what is recognized as the first safe house for women in American history. Led by Martha McWhirter, their story is one of courage and radical self-determination.
The event will feature a preview of the play followed by a discussion with playwright Nicola Pearson herself. This is an early look at a production being developed for a full Seattle staging targeted for International Women’s Day 2027.
