About this event

CHHS is excited to offer this unique opportunity to tour Capitol Hill's “Millionaire’s Row”.

Between 1900 and 1902, real estate executive James Moore purchased and platted some of the land to the south and east of Volunteer Park and called it Capitol Hill, the source of our neighborhood's namesake. Within this development, he set aside a small strip of land on 14th Avenue from East Prospect to just south of East Roy as an exclusive private community for himself, his friends, and his business associates, all of whom played significant roles in shaping Seattle.

For this tour, we will meet at the south edge of the Volunteer Park Water Tower and meander along 14th Avenue from there. Leading the tour will be Bryce Seidl and DJ Kurlander, row-residents and neighborhood preservation advocates. Participants can expect to learn some general history of both the city and the neighborhood while also getting a sneak peek into one of Millionaire’s Row’s extraordinary homes, the Anson S. and Gertrude H. Burwell House ( 709 14th Ave. E .) which has been faithfully restored and was approved for Seattle Landmark status just last year. The inside visit will be limited to the main foyer and one or two connecting rooms.

Interested in doing some pre-tour homework? Information about the neighborhood will be shared based on the research conducted to create https://millionairesrow.net -- a key source for the entire tour. You can also read our exclusive interview with Bryce and DJ, who successfully led the effort to get Millionaire's Row designated as a national historic district on the National Register of Historic Places.

The tour will start at the south edge of the Volunteer Park water tower. Parking is available along the circular drive around the water tower as well as in the Volunteer Park parking lot nearby. Expect to get your steps in! This is a walking tour and will take place rain or shine, so coats and umbrellas are encouraged.
