If you live in Everett, Tuesday night's early results were lopsided: all five city charter amendments led easily. Prop. 261 had 92.9% of the vote. It would require mayor and council candidates to have lived in the city and been registered voters for at least one year before the end of filing week, and bar them from holding another elected office.

Prop. 264, which rewrites the initiative and referendum rules, had 80.8%. Initiatives would need signatures equal to 10% of the votes cast in the last mayoral election, about 2,200, up from 5% of the last general election's votes.

About 2,200signatures an Everett initiative would need under Prop. 264

That's 10% of the votes cast in the last mayoral election. The charter previously set the bar at 5% of the last general election's votes.

  • Prop. 263: 90.3%; commissions would oversee only police and fire hiring
  • Prop. 265: 83.5%; public notices could go on the city's website
  • Turnout: 41.08%, or 120,390 of 541,142 county ballots

As of 8 p.m., the countywide count had incumbents ahead, including Rick Larsen at 71.0% to Edwin H Feller's 28.7%. More ballots will be counted each day, so close races could shift.

Monroe

More than 30 dead birds at Monroe's Lake Tye Park spark bird flu worries

If you head to in Monroe, keep your distance from the birds. The city is tracking a suspected avian flu outbreak, and Parks and Recreation Director Kevin Teague said his team has found 34 dead birds there since Saturday. Monroe has contacted the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (), which is investigating, and bird flu hasn't been confirmed at the park.

34dead birds found at Lake Tye Park since Saturday

That's the count Monroe's parks director gave KIRO 7.

The city's advisory says not to handle wild birds that are obviously sick or found dead. If you come in contact with a sick bird, clean and disinfect your shoes and clothes. The city has said several birds were found dead, and WDFW posted precautions for people who feed birds or hunt waterfowl.

WDFW's precautions cover feeders, hunters and pets

SituationPrecaution
Sick or dead birdReport it; don't touch or move it
Cleaning harvested birdsWear disposable gloves
Tools and work surfacesSoap and water, then 10% bleach
Cooking game birds155 to 165 degrees F inside
PetsDon't let them scavenge
  • Cause: not confirmed; WDFW is investigating
  • Western Washington: bird flu confirmed by wildlife officials last week
  • Yakima County: one person died; risk to the public remains low
  • Yakima County: another person had a confirmed, milder case

Bonds

Initial election night results show a replacement public hospital bid in Monroe trailing for the second time this year, while Mukilteo and Sultan appear short of the votes their bond requests need. Monroe schools, which switched to a levy proposal after a bond vote failed earlier this year, had a slight lead. HeraldNet.com

Everett Transit

At a public hearing last week on Community Transit's proposed annexation of , Councilmember Ben Zarlingo said, "One of the things I think I hear most from my constituents, and that is 40- or 60-foot buses riding around most of the day with one or two heads in them." A Herald editorial argues Community Transit would drive Everett to a better future. Everett Postheraldnet.com

I-405 closure

Northbound I-405 will close in Bothell from SR 522 to SR 527 from 11 p.m. Fri., Nov. 6, through 5 a.m. Mon., Nov. 9, as crews complete the removal of a pedestrian bridge over the highway. A detour will be in place, and ramps including the Northeast 195th Street on- and off-ramps (Exit 24) and the SR 527 off-ramp (Exit 26) will close.
