ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Snohomish County Council approved a partnership with the Washington Trails Association to build an accessible loop trail north of Lake Cassidy between Highway 9 and 123rd Ave NE, with funding ($150,000 from the 2025-26 budget) set for completion by Sept. 30.  Everett Herald
  • Light rain fell overnight at Paine Field, breaking a dry streak of 14 days with just 0.03 inch recorded and keeping this month's totals below average. Forecasts say additional systems will bring some rain through this weekend — though Saturday, Jan. 31 should remain dry.  Everett Post

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Snohomish County Health Department confirmed that a school-age teenager died from influenza last week, marking the season's first pediatric flu death in the state; officials urge residents to get their flu vaccines as flu activity continues.  Everett Herald
  • Marine mechanic Matt Kidd, who suffered strokes in 2012 and 2021, regained hand and arm function after a UW study used an electrical brain implant with six weeks of intensive rehabilitation in Covington. Researchers hope this approach will help restore function in other patients with neurological conditions.  KUOW
  • Snohomish County Health Department confirmed three additional measles cases among unvaccinated children after one attended an indoor service at Slavic Christian Church Awakening on Jan. 18 (total six cases); officials urge all residents to check their vaccination status.  Everett Herald
