GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On March 19, the Snohomish County Council approved an ordinance that allows accessory dwelling units to be built on urban properties with duplexes and reduces setback requirements—changes that follow a four-year effort and respond to a 2023 state law aimed at expanding affordable housing options. This new rule now gives residents more opportunities to build or buy homes while allowing aging in place. Everett Herald
- ➤ Snohomish Fire District 4's board approved a measure to restore the EMS levy—moving from 36 cents to 50 cents per $1,000 assessed value—and the proposal will appear on the August ballot. If voters approve the measure, an owner of a $500K property will pay about $70 extra per year in taxes, and the funds will cover rising costs and help hire additional firefighter-paramedics. The department now employs nearly 200 staff and responded to over 27,500 emergency incidents in 2022, with most calls being for medical emergencies. My Everett News
