ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On March 27, lightning struck a home in the 3200 block of Kromer Avenue in Everett, causing a roof fire that forced Jeannie Nichols’ family to evacuate safely while firefighters contained the blaze and noted electrical damage. Emergency crews responded quickly, and on Camano Island a struck tree caused minor damage to two homes — no injuries were reported — as officials remarked that such lightning incidents are rare.  Everett Herald

CRIME NEWS

  • Joseph Andrew Jacquez, 61, pleaded not guilty in Snohomish County Superior Court after being extradited from Nevada in connection with Mary Ann Daniels' 1989 death, and Judge Richard T. Okrent—presiding over the case—set bail at $2 million.  Everett Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Motorists are warned to remove studded tires by March 31 to avoid a fine of 137 dollars starting at midnight on April 1—WSDOT said the tires damage roads and increase repair costs.  Everett Post
  • Amtrak suspended most train service on the Cascades route after inspecting Horizon railcars that showed corrosion. The agency is running one daily round trip by train and will replace all other routes with buses through at least Sunday.  Everett Herald
  • On March 26th, the Everett Fire Department responded within 10 minutes to two structure fires caused by lightning strikes during a severe thunderstorm. They checked a home in Valley View—where a backyard shed suffered electrical damage—and another on Kromer Ave where a roof fire was quickly extinguished, with no injuries reported.  City of Everett
  • In her eighth State of the City address, Mayor Franklin shared new plans to grow the city's economy and protect public safety—she announced a new plan to keep youth safe with help from the Latino Civic Alliance and started a test program using drones for a faster police response—while adding major spending on housing, parks and business projects. Residents can attend a free public forum on March 31 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Everett Station to learn more about these plans.  City of Everett

  • Twenty-five former AquaSox players are on MLB Opening Day rosters — 12 teams have at least one alumnus, with the Mariners featuring 13 including stars Julio Rodriguez, Ketel Marte, and Cal Raleigh.  My Everett News
  • The Mariners opened their season Thursday against the Athletics and sports columnist Jerry Brewer said the six-year deal with catcher Cal Raleigh shows the team is keeping its young players. Brewer said the strong pitching rotation may help them win at least 85 games — though fans hope for more offense to push for playoffs.  KUOW
