COMMUNITY NEWS

  • After a fire displaced residents late Monday night at a home on Cedar Avenue in Marysville, the shelter provided beds to 10 people without caregivers (its final cold weather shift this season). Firefighters contained the fire without injuries.  Everett Herald
  • Farmer Frog, a nonprofit known for agriculture education and food distribution in Snohomish, closed permanently this month after state and federal funding freezes, county regulations and flood damage took their toll (founder Zsofia Pasztor said the group served thousands of students and fed millions during COVID and will not restart).  Snohomish County Tribune
  • Students at Mukilteo School District launched a spring food drive to fill pantries at three high schools and the Family Engagement Center in Everett. Donations are accepted from April 1 to April 30 at two Sound Credit Union sites in Mukilteo (with additional collection planned at Mukilteo QFC on May 8-9).  Everett Herald

  • Paul Pitre, chancellor at WSU Everett since 2016, left his position yesterday to return to his faculty role — Sandra Haynes assumed leadership at the campus. He was credited with building the new campus and advancing local higher education.  Everett Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • State lawmakers stalled a move to ban ship scrubbers that produce toxic discharge in the Salish Sea—environmental groups and port representatives will meet this summer to rework the proposal and lower cost concerns for cleaner water.  KUOW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health experts say age 35 marks a key time when heart risks start increasing with factors like high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Dr. Neil Siecke advises regular checkups and healthy choices (like not smoking) for early prevention.  Snohomish County Tribune

SPORTS NEWS

  • On March 31, the Everett Silvertips routed the Portland Winterhawks 7-0 at the Glass Palace (leaving the Hawks on the brink of elimination) as the team held a 3-0 series lead entering Game Four on April 1.  Everett Post
  • Everett Silvertips clinched a series sweep over the Portland Winterhawks with a 6-3 win in Game 4 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Wednesday after coming back from a two-goal deficit. They will host Game 1 of the best-of-7 series on April 11 at Angel of the Winds Arena.  Everett Herald
  • In prep softball on April 1, Archbishop Murphy scored 27 hits to defeat Shorecrest after 13 extra-inning runs, and Everett's team lost 7-6 in extras against Monroe (with Tenny Oylear securing a walk-off).  Everett Herald
  • Meadowdale baseball defeated Mountlake Terrace by a score of 7 to 3 on Wednesday as Lance Moua stole three bases and Nash Echelbarger doubled in a key win. Jackson and Stanwood led a track and field meet at Bob Larson Stadium with high scores while several matches were canceled.  Everett Herald
