COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A new Pallet shelter for homeless mothers is set to open this month in southwest Everett, offering 20 units for 12 months of transitional housing; Volunteers of America will begin selecting residents in mid-May and provide essential amenities like a laundry building + showers.  Snohomish County Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Last week, two students per district joined the Snohomish County Council as part of the Legislative Page Program to learn about government through shadowing council members, attending department presentations, drafting ordinances and participating in mock hearings – gaining hands-on experience in local civic processes.  Everett Herald
  • Today, Schack Art Center celebrated local students receiving national recognition at the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, honoring eight works from six students in grades 8 to 12. Chloe Kim earned a Gold Medal while Jing Zhang and Kalia Ratliff received Silver Medals for their art and photography.  Everett Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Everett city council approved $10.6 million last week from the general fund for property acquisitions and contractor costs for a downtown stadium and outdoor events center, which will host sports and public events and be supported by a planned $30 million bond plus further funding gap solutions expected this summer.  Snohomish County Tribune

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Local horticulturist Trevor Cameron from Sunnyside Nursery (Marysville) advises gardeners to prepare well-drained soil with added compost this spring so Clematis can display vibrant blooms. He recommends proper pruning based on each vine’s variety to help favorites like ‘Fragrant Star’ thrive.  Everett Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • Right-handed pitcher Bryce Miller is set to make a rehab start for the AquaSox today at Everett Memorial Stadium at 7:05 p.m. Miller (returning from an oblique injury) uses the outing to continue his recovery.  Everett Herald
  • Mountlake Terrace Hawks won a 3-1 District 1 3A baseball game on Tuesday with senior Owen Meek striking out eight — his best performance this season, helping five batters reach base. The team will face the Cubs in Sedro-Woolley on Thursday.  Everett Herald
  • On Tuesday, May 5, Snohomish prep girls tennis players led the Wesco 3A & 2A North Tournament with Mak Dauer advancing in the singles final and the doubles teams Hammer & Masche and Gibson & Dauer reaching finals scheduled for Wednesday. In Edmonds, top players also advanced in tough matches.  Everett Herald
  • On Tuesday, Kamiak won the Wesco 4A Championship at Cedarcrest Golf Course with a score of 288 — outpacing Arlington and other competitors. The Archbishop Murphy Wildcats beat Anacortes 5 to 3 in boys soccer to secure a quarterfinal slot with No. 1 Squalicum.  Everett Herald
  • The fifth annual Everett 3on3 Basketball Tournament will take place on July 18 and 19 at Everett Community College, featuring games on outdoor courts and inside the Walt Price Student Fitness Center. Boeing is presenting the event+ Amazon is also a sponsor, and early team registrations qualify for a discount.  Everett Post
