Good morning, Everett. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 16th of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On May 15 at Snohomish County Court Plaza, Victim Support Services and Washington State Patrol hosted an awareness event for Missing and Unidentified Persons Month; organizers displayed a binder of missing persons reports to help families share tips and receive support—officials noted that over 2,000 people are missing in Washington at any given time.  Everett Post

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • At 5:15 a.m. Thursday, firefighters responded to a fire at Shilo Village Apartments on W. Casino Road—residents slowed the fire by closing a bedroom door—displacing three people while the Fire Marshal’s Office investigates the cause.  Everett Herald

CULTURE NEWS

  • Imagine Children's Museum will host Happiest Hour 21+, an adult-only event that lets grown-ups enjoy its exhibits, music by DJ Ben Affleek, and fun features like duck races & rooftop slides to raise funds for early learning. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Northshore school board selected Justin Irish as its next superintendent on Wednesday night, choosing him from 32 applicants. He currently leads Anacortes School District and will begin his role on July 1—allowing the district six weeks for a smooth transition.  Everett Herald
  • Everett Community College will close its Early Learning Center that serves 71 children on June 30 because its funding is unsustainable—this decision may force families like student-parent Stephanie Henifin’s to find new child care options while the college shifts its focus to post-secondary education. The move comes after previous attempts to secure funds failed, leaving the center unable to cover a projected $300,000 deficit next fiscal year.  Everett Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Snohomish County Public Works will resurface 76 miles of roads this summer by paving 7 miles and chip sealing 69 miles to extend their service life—drivers using 140th Street NW/NE are advised to plan alternate routes due to single-lane closures along a 4-mile stretch. The work is part of a proactive maintenance program designed to reduce more expensive repairs in the future.  Everett Herald
  • Eight firefighters (the Snohomish Eight) are suing Snohomish Regional Fire and Rescue for alleged religious discrimination after the department denied their requests for religious Covid-19 vaccine exemptions and placed them on unpaid leave. The case was heard by the Ninth Circuit on April 3 and now awaits a decision (the firefighters want the case sent back for a trial on the evidence), which could affect similar cases.  KUOW
