CULTURE NEWS

  • Downtown Everett's Historic Everett Theatre changed hands today when Bellevue real estate agent Johnny Phan bought the 124-year-old venue—renovations will take place in July and August and the Preservation Society will end its management on June 30.  My Everett News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Early Learning Leadership Council presented survey findings on Thursday that detailed challenges in Snohomish County’s child care system. The survey of 450 parents and 70 providers found long waitlists, few rural and bilingual options, and high costs – council members urge expanding services – with a full report due by the end of June.  Everett Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sound Transit is planning an Everett light rail extension that will finish the spine and link Everett and Tacoma—starting with an initial section in 2037 and a full line in 2041—and will cost an estimated $6.1 billion with six new stations along a 16.3-mile route. The agency is asking residents for feedback on station access improvements and will hold an environmental review this summer.  Everett Post
  • The Washington State Department of Commerce announced Friday a 10% cap on rent hikes until the end of 2025—this cap follows HB 1217 which limits increases to 7% plus the consumer price index or 10% and sets a 5% cap for mobile home lot rents. The department will release updated rent cap information for 2026 this summer after reviewing new federal inflation data.  Everett Post
