Good morning, Everett. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 11th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Eat Happy Now uses an app to schedule volunteers who pick up surplus food from local stores and deliver it to food banks in Snohomish County — benefiting groups like Millennia Ministries and the Salvation Army. The program, launched in 2022, collects up to 675,000 pounds of food as part of a scheduled effort to provide meals for food insecure residents and plans to rescue 1 million meals by year-end.  Snohomish County Tribune
  • Everett-based KSER 90.7 FM named Garett Michaels as its new general manager after a national search — he will begin later this month. He replaces Tom Clendening who retired this spring after 13 years — Steve Ward served as interim manager.  Snohomish County Tribune

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Dick’s Drive-In will open its first Everett restaurant at the corner of Center Road and Highway 99 tomorrow — the celebration includes a 9:30 a.m. ribbon cutting ceremony, live music performances, and local activities throughout the weekend.  Everett Post
  • Dick’s Drive-In will open its new Everett location at 1629 Center Road on June 12th with a ribbon cutting at 9:30 a.m. and its first service at 10 a.m.—the four-day celebration will include live school band performances on Thursday, an Elvis impersonator on Friday, and a Father’s Day frisbee giveaway on Sunday.  Everett Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Everett City Council met on June 4 to review the Everett 2044 Comprehensive Plan, update development regulations—such as revised inclusionary zoning and accessory dwelling unit setbacks—and pass a minimum wage ordinance required to meet the July 1 deadline. The council also reviewed legislative priorities and funding for local projects, with final readings on the plan scheduled for today and additional hearings set for June 18.  Everett Post
  • Everett commuters traveling north on I-5 will face lane closures at the Ship Canal Bridge starting June 20-23 and further full closures and two-lane reductions from July 18 to August 18 as part of a $203 million repair project—officials advise planning alternate routes using transit or carpooling to avoid heavy traffic. Additional work on the bridge will continue through 2027.  Everett Herald
  • Washington’s Supreme Court set new caseload limits for public defenders that will take effect Jan. 1, 2026, requiring each lawyer to handle no more than 47 felony cases or 120 misdemeanor cases a year. Local governments have up to 10 years to meet these rules and county officials warn that tight budgets and a shortage of lawyers may force extra state aid — a measure that could delay defense services.  Everett Herald
  • City Council will hold a hearing today at 6:30 p.m. to consider proposed regulations that would allow businesses to operate from residential corner sites, with Tim Ellis planning to use his home basement for his Chai Cupboard if approved—a final vote is set for June 18 and the plan aims to support local, walkable commerce.  Snohomish County Tribune

HEALTH NEWS

  • Everett’s last social center for disabled adults will close on July 19 due to state funding cuts, leaving over 100 clients with few local options for essential programs and health services. Clients will need to travel long distances for similar support (a sign of unequal funding) and advocates warn that future Medicaid increases remain uncertain (adding to potential hardships).  KUOW
