- ➤ Everett Herald staff are in ongoing union contract talks with Carpenter Media Group after earlier layoffs, and the union is asking subscribers to cancel subscriptions if fair working conditions are not met. The union says a $20.50 base wage and a requirement of 2—3 bylines a day force reporters to rush important stories. Everett Post
- ➤ Everett is hosting National Night Out Against Crime, a community event where police, fire, and emergency management will visit neighborhoods on Tuesday, Aug. 5—organizers must register their event by Tuesday, July 29. Everett Post

- ➤ A federal judge in Seattle sentenced a 73-year-old Arizona man to four years in prison, 10 years of supervised release, a $3,000 restitution payment, and required him to register as a sex offender after he traveled from Tucson to Everett with the intent to meet an undercover agent posing as a 13-year-old — he had sent explicit images and possessed child sexual abuse images on his phone. - ➤ On June 30, the Washington Department of Commerce released a 251-page draft of its Climate Action Plan and is taking public comments online until Aug. 22. The plan — which offers 36 ways to lower greenhouse gases and 152 climate actions — will be finalized on Dec. 1. Everett Herald
- ➤ Southern resident orcas are using kelp as tools to groom one another — Dr. Michael Weiss from the Center for Whale Research said the behavior is a social act that could guide future marine research. KUOW
