Good morning, Everett. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 12th of July.
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ An international panel of 31 scientists reported that current efforts to save endangered orcas in Northwest waters have not stopped the decline of southern resident killer whales—calling for stricter vessel speed limits and noise regulations to create quiet, clean and salmon-rich waters. KUOW
- ➤ Everett officials completed an environmental assessment that found no significant impact for the Walter E Hall Park Community Connections Path at 1226 W Casino Rd. The public may review the Environmental Review Record — copies are available at city offices and Everett Public Library — and submit comments by July 28. City of Everett
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Four candidates are vying for Everett’s mayor seat next year as they focus on affordable services & balanced spending ahead of the August 5 primary. Incumbent Cassie Franklin and challengers Scott Murphy, Janice Greene, and Rich Ryan have raised over $300,000 in campaign funds while proposing changes to manage a $173 million general fund. Everett Herald
- ➤ Washington's megabill passed last week may raise household electricity bills by $115 a year by 2029 and cost clean energy projects up to 21,800 jobs by 2030, analysts say. The law cuts tax credits for renewable energy projects so developers must start construction by year-end—otherwise they lose the credits, officials warn. Everett Herald
- ➤ Incumbent Paula Rhyne now faces challenger Ryan Crowther for the District 2 council seat in Everett with the Aug. 5 primary — Jonathan Shapiro dropped out for not meeting residency rules, and his name still appears on the ballot. Crowther wants tougher rules for public safety — he favors measures like enhanced buffer zones, while Rhyne supports a plan that focuses on crime prevention and better housing support. Everett Herald
