Good morning, Everett. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 18th of July.
COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen met with officials at the Everett food bank last week to review how federal cuts ended funding from the Emergency Food and Shelter Program and reduced TEFAP and LFPA support that helped over 139,000 people in 2024. Officials said the bank will deliver only 5 million pounds of food this fiscal year—down from 10 million pounds last year—due to planned SNAP cuts and rising costs. Everett Post
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A federal judge sentenced Snohomish resident Kyle Christopher Benton to two years in prison and three years' probation after he pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a machine gun and unregistered firearms used to support extremist activities — court records show he promoted neo-Nazi propaganda and anti-Semitic content on social media. Everett Herald
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Snohomish County PUD will hold an open house at Hidden River Middle School (9224 Paradise Lake Road, Snohomish) on July 31 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. to gather public input on three potential routes for a new transmission line between Maltby and Paradise; businesses and residents are encouraged to share their feedback as construction is set to begin in 2028. - ➤ Starting Saturday, crews will close four lanes on southbound I-5 between Broadway Avenue and 100th Street Southeast, covering 4 miles, from 7 p.m. until 9 a.m. as part of an $8.1 million paving project; lane closures will continue on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights with two lanes reopening early each morning — officials warn delays will last 14 weeks due to the work — and additional changes may be announced.
