CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Late Friday night, July 18, a suspect stole a 2018 Pierce Enforcer Pumper fire engine from the 2900 block of Hoyt Avenue during a medical emergency and drove it through north Everett, damaging parked vehicles and landscaping in five areas before fleeing on foot—no injuries were reported. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Three candidates Carson Sanderson, Arun Sharma + Brian Travis are competing for an open Northshore School Board seat as the district grapples with rapid growth, overcrowded schools and budget challenges; the primary election is scheduled for Aug. 5 and the top two will advance to the November ballot. Sharma has raised $15,075 and Sanderson $5,509 while Travis has not raised funds, reflecting varying campaign approaches. Everett Herald

- ➤ On Wednesday night, Port of Everett CEO Lisa Lefeber said tariffs dropped cargo revenue by 10% and delayed projects such as Cargo Pier 3 electrification, while she criticized Gov. Bob Ferguson for awarding a lucrative ferry contract to an out-of-state shipbuilder — she also said four restaurant leases have been signed and construction on 300 new housing units will start in November. - ➤ The Snohomish County Health Department paused hiring for regular, project, and temporary roles because new federal rules bar DEI programs from receiving grants. The hiring freeze will last until Aug. 15—when a federal court will hear a lawsuit challenging the restrictions. Everett Herald
- ➤ Five candidates — including labor organizer Sam Hem, consultant Mason Rutledge, retiree Steven Sullivan, Village Theatre manager Erica Weir and maintenance worker Bill Wheeler — are running to fill the open District 1 seat on Everett City Council after Mary Fosse said she would not seek reelection. The primary election is set for Aug. 5 as voters will choose the top two candidates for the November contest. Everett Herald
