Good morning, Everett. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 20th of August.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Friends gathered at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church on Aug. 14 to honor Rev. Carol Jensen—an advocate for social justice who spent 35 years as a minister and led local faith initiatives. She died on Aug. 2 from cancer just before her 77th birthday and inspired many in our community.  Snohomish County Tribune
  • Deborah Tahara, a Maltby Food Bank volunteer and stand-up comedian, is hosting a comedy fundraiser featuring Everett comedian Taylor Clark to help end food insecurity. The event 'Comedy with Heart' is scheduled for 8 p.m. Aug. 29 at Echo Falls Golf Club—ticket prices range from $35 to $55 with proceeds supporting the food bank.  Everett Herald
  • Residents at the Overlook at Riverfront have waited years for Eclipse Mill Park and new business spaces—what was expected in 2022 now won’t see its first phase completed until fall, while empty storefronts add to mounting frustration. Pandemic setbacks and funding issues have delayed projects and shifted plans for key amenities in the neighborhood.  Everett Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • James and Shelly Lee sent a political postcard mailer that criticized school board candidate Anna Marie Jackson Laurence for allowing adult volunteers to lead Jackson High’s robotics team—Jack in the Bot—despite concerns that this sidelined students. The Lees claim the board ignored requests to discuss student safety and used school funds to help build the robot, prompting calls for new board members to better address these issues.  Snohomish County Tribune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Port of Everett and EarthCorps are hosting a volunteer event at Union Slough this Saturday—volunteers will remove invasive species from the 24-acre restoration site that supports native wildlife and juvenile salmon. Participants must register online and bring suitable gear.  Everett Herald
  • The American Meteorological Society report finds that global average temperatures reached record highs in 2024 — a result of rising greenhouse gases, with scientists noting that longer, hotter summers led to more heat waves, wildfires and flooding in North Sound — evidence of growing climate challenges.  Everett Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Everett City Council approved a 2,000-square-foot Skate Dot at Lion’s Park that features a small half pipe, quarter pipe and grinding curb to meet local skating interest—funded by capital improvement funds and an $80,000 Snohomish County grant. The final design is expected this fall with a summer 2026 opening—while council reviews plans for additional park lighting on Aug. 27.  Everett Post

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Greater Everett Chamber of Commerce is partnering with Associated Industries of the Inland Northwest to offer members affordable health, dental, and vision coverage through Association Health Plans—this program will launch at a Member Meeting on September 10 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at APEX Everett with industry expert presentations on enrollment and pricing details.  My Everett News
