Good morning, Everett. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 27th of August.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Gauge Bryant, a 13-year-old from Everett, dove off a Silver Lake dock on July 9 to rescue an 11-year-old boy who fell into the water and needed CPR—his quick actions earned him a Citizen Life-Saving Award from the City Council and Everett Fire Department—while the boy later recovered at Providence Regional Medical Center.  Snohomish County Tribune

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Kroger will close the Fred Meyer store on Casino Road in mid-October due to financial losses and a challenging regulatory environment—leaving local residents with fewer nearby grocery options. City officials are preparing resource maps and public transportation help while the company offers affected employees transfers to other locations.  Snohomish County Tribune

CRIME NEWS

  • Early Saturday morning, Everett police said a DUI crash on the 4300 block of Rucker Avenue involving a 2025 Kia K4 occurred after the driver and passenger fled a patrol—causing the car to hit a building, ejecting the passenger who was pronounced dead and injuring the driver who was taken to hospital.  Everett Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Three Everett School Board incumbents condemned a smear campaign funded by a former student's family — using vague mailers and a website supporting board opponent Tom Clarke. They said the tactics distract from real issues facing students and educators and noted that multiple PACs funded by the Lees contributed over $389,000 ahead of the November election.  Everett Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Everett resident Connie Chapman dropped her and her husband's ballots at the downtown post office on Aug. 5 before the cutoff, but they were not counted because the mail was not postmarked the same day (USPS does not guarantee same-day postmarking). Voters can avoid this issue by asking for a free manual postmark at the counter or using an official ballot drop box.  Everett Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • Everett AquaSox won 3 to 2 against the Spokane Indians on Aug. 21 at Funko Field—Felnin Celesten played a key role in bringing victory. The team will host a home series against the Eugene Emeralds from Aug. 26 to Aug. 31.  Snohomish County Tribune
