- ➤ On Friday, an endangered orca known as J36 (Alki) was seen carrying her dead newborn with its umbilical cord attached between Orcas and Cypress Islands off Washington, and on Saturday researchers confirmed she took deep breaths before diving to retrieve the calf. This tragic event adds to the challenges facing the orca population as they continue to struggle with declining Chinook salmon numbers. KUOW
