- ➤ Unionized journalists at The Daily Herald ratified their first contract with the company after two years of negotiations which provides guaranteed raises and protections for staff. The contract covers staff — six reporters, a photographer, an opinion editor, and two sports writers — organized under the Everett NewsGuild. Everett Herald
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Washington's Glacier Peak is losing much of its ice as a warm, dry summer melts one-third of its glacier area and lowers river flows for salmon. Researchers warn that the peak may be nearly glacierless in 50 years — a change that worries local tribes and officials due to its impact on water and fish. KUOW
- ➤ The orca J pod in Central Puget Sound welcomed a newborn calf spotted first last Thursday in Saratoga Passage near Whidbey and Camano islands and again Friday. The calf, born to 18-year-old J-42, was seen near its grandmother and uncle as researchers plan to re-evaluate its condition on Friday — a key step in monitoring the endangered population. KUOW
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Friday, the Snohomish County auditor dismissed a challenge to Niko Battle’s voter registration — he remains registered even though a Superior Court judge ruled that he cannot appear on the November ballot due to a lack of evidence proving his residency. Everett Herald
- ➤ On September 19, the Everett City Council rebuked Kroger’s plan to close the Fred Meyer on Casino Road because over 343 jobs and local food access would be threatened. The council urged Kroger to work with city officials and union UFCW 3000—seeking a solution that serves the community. Everett Post
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Seattle Children’s Hospital will lay off 154 employees this fall — including some at its North Clinic in Everett — due to anticipated state and federal cuts. The layoffs will begin on Nov. 15 and will also reduce 350 open roles at sites in Seattle, Bellevue, Federal Way and Kennewick. Everett Herald
