- ➤ Owner Katherine Hillmann will open Hillmann's Bagels at the former Strawberry Patch Cafe on Colby Avenue in downtown Everett after the New Year. The shop will serve East Coast-style bagels, deli sides and brewed coffee—donating any leftover food to a local low-barrier food bank. Everett Post
- ➤ A former Starbucks barista in Everett filed a complaint in Snohomish County Superior Court on Tuesday, saying he worked 18 years for the company and that Starbucks broke the city law by not giving him extra work hours before hiring new staff—his lawsuit seeks class action status to cover other part-time workers. The complaint asks for penalties and compensatory damages for lost wages and tips under the new minimum wage rules. Everett Herald

- ➤ Law enforcement officers from Washington, Oregon and Idaho will patrol local roads from 4 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday in an effort to curb drunk driving and honor fallen trooper Christopher Gadd—who died in a 2024 crash after a driver collided with his patrol vehicle. The second annual One More Stop initiative will target impaired, aggressive and speeding drivers to keep roads safer. Everett Herald

- ➤ Everett’s city council and Mayor Cassie Franklin adopted a resolution last week by a 7-1 vote urging Kroger to reconsider closing the Fred Meyer store at Casino Road and Evergreen Way, which will shut Oct. 18 and would have marked its 50th anniversary. City leaders cited police data showing a 36% drop in theft offenses that contradicts Kroger’s claim—investments in public safety have improved the neighborhood—and they plan to redevelop the site to support local markets. - ➤ Snohomish County Executive Dave Somers appointed Kim VanPelt as the new Health Department Director; she will start October 20 following an extensive national search. VanPelt — who worked in Arizona — replaces Dennis Worsham and will lead a department of about 200 staff. My Everett News

- ➤ Providence Swedish North Puget Sound announced Tuesday that Dr. Sanjiv Tewari has joined as chief medical officer to oversee more than 1,500 physicians and clinicians in Everett, Edmonds, and Mill Creek. The pulmonary intensivist brings over 20 years of hospital leadership experience (including time at HCA Florida Blake Hospital) to the role. Everett Herald

- ➤ The Mariners lead the AL West by three games and need a magic number of three in the next six games to clinch the division title, their first since 2001—while Cal Raleigh is having an outstanding season with many home runs that could boost his MVP chances.
