Good morning, Everett. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 26th of September.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Everett NewsGuild secured a contract with Carpenter Media Group after months of negotiations that led to guarantees for raises, job protections, two days of hybrid work, and five days of bereavement leave—removing wage quotas tied to story production following significant layoffs last year. The union ratified the agreement on Sept. 19, giving Herald workers greater security than before.  Everett Post

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Historic Everett Theatre reopened today after a three-month closure with new owner Johnny Phan—who paid $1.5 million—and hundreds of thousands of dollars in renovations that updated the sky ceiling and interior. The 800-seat venue will begin its new era with a James Taylor tribute band tonight and host Haley Reinhart on Saturday.  Everett Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local community colleges saw a drop in international student enrollment as fall classes began, with Edmonds College reporting a 25% decrease and Everett Community College a 19% decline due to visa appointment delays—colleges plan to boost global recruitment with new strategies later this year.  Everett Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Everett will get nearly 3,790 free trees from a USDA-funded project led by the Snohomish Conservation District and the City of Everett to boost the canopy in Twin Creeks, Westmont, Evergreen, Pinehurst, Riverside, Port Gardner and Delta by December 2028. Residents can check their eligibility and join planting events at the Waterfront Trail, Interurban Trail and Wiggums Hollow Park — a plan to improve air quality and neighborhood livability.  Everett Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Everett City Council allocated $2.5 million from a state grant to design a new pedestrian bridge linking Everett Community College’s main campus and its new Learning Resource Center—also connecting to Washington State University Everett campus. The funding comes from the $17 billion Move Ahead Washington transportation package and follows years of planning for the project.  Everett Herald
  • Sound Transit is weighing design changes for the Everett Link light rail extension to save money amid rising costs — the changes will not remove stations or affect service levels. Officials are reviewing options like adjusting station designs and rail alignments to meet cost targets, but no final decisions have been made.  Everett Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Snohomish County Health Department is offering free school-required vaccines to children under 19 today from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at its Public Health Clinic on 3020 Rucker Ave.—this program helps students stay up to date so they do not miss class.  Everett Herald
