CULTURE NEWS

  • This October, Everett hosts fall festivities including Haunted Harbor on Oct. 24, a cemetery tour and trick-or-treating on Oct. 25, a farmers market finale and pumpkin carving pop-up on Oct. 26, plus a 21+ rockin’ Halloween party on Oct. 31—local organizers offer free and ticketed events for families, adults and pets.  Everett Post

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Columbus Day Storm on October 12th, 1962 (64 years ago) struck the North Sound with wind gusts up to 150 mph, causing widespread power outages and tree damage. The storm claimed 46 lives (a record for windstorms), and experts say a similar event hitting a larger community today could cause severe damage.  Everett Post
  • A massive marine heat wave known as the Blob has raised Pacific water temperatures from Kamchatka to California while cool water from below has kept our local coast near normal—scientists warn that rising temperatures could soon affect fisheries and weather patterns. Local conditions remain steady as researchers continue to monitor the heat wave's impact.  KUOW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Everett City Council will vote on Oct. 22 on extending the 'no sit, no lie' law that bans sitting or lying on public property—mainly in downtown buffer zones—to address visible illegal activity and guide people to available services. Supporters note a decline in service calls while some council members argue the measure unfairly targets vulnerable individuals.  Everett Herald
  • Everett Mayor Cassie Franklin approved a temporary free bus route along Casino Road connecting to the Everett Mall to help residents access stores after Fred Meyer closed. The free service will run for six months—supporting stops at Walmart, Trader Joes, and Sevan Pharmacy.  My Everett News

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Monday, Providence published its annual well-being survey of over 700 Snohomish County residents—showing that physical health remains the top driver while only 46% reported strong financial security compared to 54% last year. The survey found overall well-being has declined, with less than one in four residents rating their physical health highly and fewer feeling they can impact their community.  Everett Herald
